There is no "university chamber of commerce" department nor does the University share student information with prospective employers without student consent. Other red flags that point to this being a phishing email include 1) If Dr. Stephen Howell works for DRES, why did he send the email from a personal Gmail account? 2) Anytime the sender wants to switch to a "different from school email," it is a scam. 3) The letter is informal, not directly addressed to the recipient and is a text attachment. 4) Why would a random person contact me unexpectedly about a position without interviewing me and be willing to pay over $200 per hour for what is essentially unskilled labor? If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

The Smith Career Center does not share student information with prospective employers unless the student specifically requests their information be shared. Students who replied to the email were directed to a web site to fill out an application that asked for name, address, email address, and phone number. Once the scammer had the phone number, the conversation switched to texting. The scammer was vague and evasive when asked about any details, like company name, what the company does, what the job duties entail, etc. The scammer then sends a $1,000 check. Typically these types of scams end with the scammer telling the target that the check was too large. The target should go ahead and deposit the check, but write a check or send gift cards to the scammer for the over-payment. The scammer's check bounces, and the target is out the over-payment.
